Volunteers make the WPGA run

Help support amateur golf in Western Pennsylvania. Be inside the ropes, work in a fast-paced team environment, and give back to the game at Western Pennsylvania’s most elite and historic golf championships.

Without the support and dedication of its volunteer base, the WPGA would not be able to manage its many programs and services throughout the season.

Benefits of volunteering

  • Camaraderie with fellow volunteers, staff, and players
  • Official WPGA apparel
  • Visit many of the great golf courses in Western Pennsylvania
  • Opportunity to watch some of the best golfers in Western Pennsylvania
  • Complimentary lunch provided at all events
  • Attend the annual Volunteer Appreciation Day

Competition Volunteers

Based on one’s level of previous experience, Competition Volunteers are designated into one of the following categories: On-Course Support or Rules Official.

On-Course Support
Serve as hosts, marshals, pace of play monitors, live scoring officials, and many other important roles at each event. It is a great opportunity to gain valuable behind-the-scenes experience in all facets of golf administration.

Rules Officials
Provide on-course assistance to players with regards to the Rules of Golf and pace of play. Rules Officials are appointed by the WPGA based on their knowledge of the Rules of Golf and their experience in officiating.

Course Rating Volunteers

There are course rating teams in different regions of Western PA, and they are assigned courses in their geographic area. WPGA course raters follow strict USGA guidelines for rating each course.

Typically, teams of two are assigned a specific set of tees to rate, in which a multitude of different variables must be determined to accurately calculate a proper course and slope rating.
