LATROBE — The final qualifying round for the 125th WPGA Amateur Championship is set for Wednesday at Latrobe Elks Golf Club.
78 players are scheduled to compete in the field, with 21 players qualifying for the 125th WPGA Amateur Championship at historic Sunnehanna Country Club on July 14-15. Two alter positions will be up for grabs, as well.
In the first WPGA Amateur qualifying round, 11 players earned spots in the competition with their efforts at Greensburg Country Club. Tim Novic and Carson Kittsley each shot 5-over to take the top spot in the field.
At The Country Club of Meadville, Colton Lusk’s impressive score of 3-under secured low scorer honors in the second qualifier.
The WPGA Amateur Championship is a two-day, 54-hole competition to determine the region’s top amateur player.
The West Penn Amateur began in 1899 and has been played all but two years since — 1917-18, during World War I.
Past winners include seven USGA champions: Eben Byers (U.S. Amateur), William C. Fownes (U.S. Amateur), Carl Kauffmann (U.S. Amateur Public Links), Sean Knapp (USGA State Team, U.S. Senior Amateur), Jim Masserio (U.S. Junior Amateur), Arnold Palmer (U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open, U.S. Senior Open) and Nathan Smith (U.S. Mid-Amateur, U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, USGA State Team).
This will be the fourth time that the long-running competition will be played at Sunnehanna Country Club, with past winners at Johnstown club being Matt Holuta, Smith and Knapp — winner of a record nine WPGA Amateur Championships.
