Darin Kowalski knows what it’s like to be in the position he’s in today going into the final round of an important golf tournament.
“I feel like my game is as good as it's ever been,” he said. “All I can do is go out and keep playing like I’ve been.”
If he does, he’ll become the champion of 123rd WPGA Amateur Championship today at Hannastown Golf Club.
Kowalski put together rounds of 65 and 70 to have a one-shot lead over man who knows a bit about winning the Am: eight-time champ Sean Knapp.
“I have nothing to lose,” Kowalski said.
His made a pair of eagles on the 14th hole during rounds of 65-70, but in his mind his performance was solid with room to improve.
“Yeah, I’d say I was pretty solid but nothing great,” Kowalski said. “It’s me and Sean at 10:15. Can’t wait to get out there.”
Remember when Kowalski said he had nothing to lose? Guess who else shares that feeling?
“I know I have to play well if I’m going to win.” Knapp said. “And maybe people think I have a big advantage because I’m a member here. But only if I hit good shots. The final round will be a real test”
In the morning round, Knapp made six birdies in a 66. He carded an even-par 70 in the afternoon, including bogeys on 16 and 17.
Nine players finished the first day finished under par after two rounds and 32 players will compete in the final round.
