Palmer Cup Matches
Started in 1996 the Palmer Cup has become a beloved yearly competition that celebrates and honors the life and legacy of one of Western Pennsylvania’s preeminent sports figures, Arnold Palmer.
The competition, held at Palmer’s Latrobe Country Club, pits teams representing the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association against the Tri-State Section PGA in a two-round match play competition.
The WPGA team is made up of 14 amateur players, while the Tri-State team consists of 14 PGA of America professionals. Each team fields four senior players as part of their 14.
Thanks to his indelible mark made on amateur golf in the region and his support of the WPGA, the West Penn Golf team is known as The Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Team.
In its early years, the competition was dominated by the professionals of the Tri-State, which won the first 12 Palmer Cup Matches. Since then, however, the two organizations have played far more evenly, with the WPGA winning five straight Palmer Cups from 2014 to 2018.
Through 2025, the series is in favor of the Tri-State Section PGA 18-9-2.
