Handicapping

Handicapping is a unique and integral part of the game of golf. It remains the WPGA’s most visible and widely used service for all player’s to compete equitably on any golf course.

A Handicap Index® represents a player’s demonstrated playing ability. Handicap allowances provide further equity for all player’s participating in a specific format of play. It takes just 54 holes of golf to establish a Handicap Index.

As an Allied Golf Association, the WPGA issues a Handicap Index to all members as part of their membership.

The World Handicap System™ includes the Rules of Handicapping and the Course Rating System™. Its purpose is to enhance the enjoyment of the game of golf and to give as many golfers as possible the opportunity to obtain and maintain a Handicap Index, use their Handicap Index on any golf course around the world, and to compete, or play a casual round, with anyone else on a fair and equitable basis.

To assist, the WPGA issues a Course Rating™ and Slope Rating™ to all courses in our jurisdiction for all tees to promote fair and equitable play. We also provide handicap education and administration, and works with club Handicap Committees and staff to ensure the accuracy of posting scores and compliance with the Rules of Handicapping. For more information on the World Handicap System and the Rules of Handicapping, please visit the WHS Hub (click here). Other WPGA responsibilities include education on the WHS and administration of the Club Authorization Program, communications, the WPGA Hardware Program, and assistance with reviewing and developing publications.
