A golf tournament with added, historic meaning, the 76th WPGA Brothers Tournament is set for Friday at Shannopin Country Club.
The contest — consisting of 18 holes of Chapman format stroke play — will tee off at 8 a.m. with 26 teams set to compete. The event features a gross and net division for competitors.
The only competition of its kind in the country, the WPGA Brothers Tournaments were started in 1950 to honor two brothers killed in battle during World War II.
Since then, the Brothers Tournament has become a yearly way of honoring the two men and celebrating the bond formed by family.

The first Brothers Tournament was won Bud and Dick Semple, for whom the Association’s WPGA Semple Century Foursomes Championship is now named after.
Brothers Chick and Rob Wagner have won the event a record 11 times. Impressively, their wins have spanned four different decades with the first coming in 1979 and the most recent coming in 2017.
A year ago, the teams of Parker and Tanner Johnson, and Joe and Robert Blumling, won the two divisions. The Johnson brothers made history, shooing a record score of 10-under for the victory in the gross division. The Blumling’s shot 2-under to claim the net title.
Also included in this year’s field is the team of Alex and Nick Turowski. Nick, a rising sophomore at West Virginia, is the reigning WPGA Junior Player of the Year, and recently qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Ronald and David DeNunzio, who have won the competition three times, will tee off at 8:30 a.m.
2021 champions Ryan and Tim Ungarean and 2007 champs David and John Dzuban are also in the field.
